Rights Group Threatens Protest To Force End To Modified Cars
Dispute
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express
December 23,
2005
JERUSALEM, ISRAEL--A disability rights group has threatened a
public protest if a dispute over modified cars isn't settled soon.
Wednesday's Haaretz Israel News reported that 150 people with disabilities have waited several months for vehicles that have been modified with specialized steering wheels or other equipment.
The National Insurance Institute, which is responsible for having the accessories installed, has been locked in a bureaucratic struggle with its workers' committee over whether the paperwork for the installations should be done at the institute's main Jerusalem offices rather than branches across Israel.
Yoav Kraim, spokesperson of Campaign for Handicapped Persons in Israel, said the dispute is "putting 150 people under house arrest without a trial".
"If it isn't resolved immediately, we will come in buses to the National Insurance Institute complex and hold a strike," Kraim said.
Haaretz noted that the Institute's Director General Yigal Ben Shalom has decided to intervene in order to allow disabled people to get the rights they deserve.
