"Positive Outlook As Sheltered Workshop Closes"
August 2, 2004

SUMNER, WASHINGTON--The following four paragraphs are excerpts from a story in Monday's Tacoma News Tribune:

Every day Doug Fenner sits at his small wooden desk in an East Pierce County warehouse and intently performs repetitive tasks. He cleans a telephone with a plastic brush. He replaces the plastic sheath that fits around the buttons.

The Puyallup man with Down syndrome has been working the same full-time job for 15 years. Nearby, his coworkers clean the telephone headsets and seal them in bags, sometimes sitting idly or attaching themselves to their supervisors.

The comfort of this routine will disappear Aug. 31 when Vadis, a Sumner-based business providing job services to the developmentally disabled, closes its sheltered workshop.

But Vadis staff members say this closure will be a positive step.
