Stable Homes Best For Kids With FAE/FAS

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON--Families and communities can improve the lives of children that have fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol effect, a University of Washington study has revealed.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a set of physical and mental disabilities people can experience if their mother drinks alcohol while she is pregnant. Fetal alcohol effect has some of the same characteristics as FAS, but is not usually as evident.

The study, which was published in the August edition of the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, found that people with FAS or FAE exhibit a generally high rate of "inappropriate behaviors", often leading to institutionalization or jail.

However, those people diagnosed with the conditions early, and who were raised in stable homes, were 2 to 4 times less likely to experience these "adverse life outcomes".

"There are things families and communities can do to really improve outcome," lead researcher Dr. Ann P. Streissguth told Reuters.
