More Employment Options Available To Workers With
Disabilities
September 16, 2004
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND--More
employers in the United Kingdom are opening their doors to hiring workers with
disabilities for a wide variety of jobs, The Independent reported Thursday.
Chris Hughes, a career consultant for students with disabilities at Manchester University, said there are many reasons for this.
"It's partly because of recent legislation, partly because of the recognition that customers too have disabilities, and also the feeling that firms want to be seen to be doing the right thing," Hughes said. "The combination of all these things has prompted a more positive view of disability by the business community than ever before,"
Examples include the government's Civil Service program, launched earlier this year, which places workers with disabilities in government jobs.
Private businesses -- such as Johnson & Johnson, BBC, Land Rover, and Ford Motors -- are in the sixth year of a mentoring program for students with disabilities.
