School Accused Of Placing Boy In Wooden Box

TOPEKA, KANSAS--The former
foster mother of a 10-year-old boy with developmental disabilities has accused
the Lincoln School District of segregating the child from his peers, and
putting him in a wooden box when he wouldn't behave, the Salina Journal
reported.
Diane Briscoe told lawmakers at a September 20 meeting of the Legislative Education Planning Committee that teachers placed the boy "against his will" in the 4-foot wide, 4-foot long and 6 foot-high box for acting out. The box had a light, a fan, and a small window, she said.
Briscoe said the school should have come up with other ways to deal with the boy's behavior, which results from his autism and mental retardation.
Superintendent Terry Stratman said Briscoe, a former school employee, was not telling the truth and that she "has absolutely no credibility out here whatsoever".
Stratman said he plans to attend the next Committee meeting later in the month to tell his side of the story.
