Oregon Good Samaritan Rounds Up Equipment For Hurricane Victims

GLADSTONE, OREGON--It's 2,500 miles from Gladstone, Oregon to New Orleans, Louisiana.

But that distance has not stopped Bill Guthrie from doing his part to help Hurricane Katrina victims.

The Oregonian reported last Friday that Guthrie, 52, mounted a relief effort from his own garage, getting Portland-area neighbors to donate 19 wheelchairs, more than 40 walkers, four hospital beds and dozens of canes, crutches, bath seats and other medical equipment.

"I'd seen what (Katrina) was doing down there on TV, and I wanted to do something to help those people," said Guthrie, who is paralyzed below the waist and has used a wheelchair himself for the past 15 years.

The equipment will be loaded onto a trailer and shipped to the Gulf Coast in the next few days.

"I just wanted to help mankind," Guthrie said, "the people down there who really need these things."
