Girl Named "Kid of Character"
December 16, 2005
FORT
LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA--The following six paragraphs are excerpts from a story in
the South Florida Sun-Sentinel:
Jullisa Hibbert is the spark in her classroom.
The 5-year-old girl gets around with leg braces and a toddler-sized walker. But she can't jump rope, play hopscotch or ride a bike.
"That's OK," she said, as she tuned out her classmates and played with her toys. "I can't jump [a rope] but I can turn it and I play [kickball]."
Because of her cooperative spirit, Jullisa recently was named a South Florida Sun-Sentinel Kid of Character for cooperation in the Broward County School District's Character Education program.
Asked her reactions to her award before she was officially notified, Jullisa did not mince words. "What award?" she responded. "I'm not aware of nothing."
Later, before Jacobs could respond to a question about Jullisa, she interrupted: "Don't say one word because I can say something for myself."
