Canada's Steven Fletcher Takes His Wheelchair On Snow
Campaign
December 28, 2005
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--The following four
paragraphs are excerpts from a recent story published on CTV's website:
Winnipeg Conservative Steven Fletcher, the first quadriplegic member of Parliament, has faced tough challenges in his career, and in life. Now, he's facing a new one: campaigning in the snow.
The rookie MP from Winnipeg, an outdoorsman at heart, was paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident nine years ago. Following a year in hospital, he was told he should consider moving into a nursing home to spend the rest of his days.
Instead, he earned an MBA, was elected president of the student body at the University of Manitoba and became president of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba and embarked on a full-time political career.
Just 16 months ago, Fletcher ran in the riding of Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia. Fletcher took on star Liberal candidate former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray and won.
