Trial Of Accused Trooper Delayed, Again
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express
February 21, 2007

BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS--A March 6 trial date for former Arkansas State Trooper Larry Norman on misdemeanor negligent homicide charges has been postponed, the Morning News reported.

It is the second time the jury trial has been held off, the first time being last September.

Norman has pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the March 7, 2006 shooting death of Joseph "Erin" Hamley.

A Benton County special grand jury indicted Norman after determining that he shot 21-year-old Hamley -- an innocent man who had cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, and a mental illness -- after mistaking him for a Michigan prison escapee. The grand jury concluded that the unarmed Hamley was likely following Norman's orders to roll over onto his stomach when the trooper fired the fatal shot.

The grand jury also expressed concern about a lack of communication and coordination between the state officers and county sheriff's deputies that were on the scene.

Norman is on paid leave from the department pending the outcome of the trial.
