Soldier Fights To Keep Service Dog At His Side
By Dave

SAN ANTONIO,
TEXAS--A soldier who was wounded in Iraq is fighting the U.S. Army to keep his
service dog with him while he recuperates.
Pfc. Adrian Garcia lost both of his legs during combat last year. He has been staying at Fisher House at Fort Sam Houston while receiving treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center. He has about another year left of rehabilitation at the facility.
But hospital officials told him that Mookie, his pit bull terrier, couldn't stay with him at Fisher House.
Garcia has told reporters that Mookie helps him with his balance and his mood.
"More importantly, she's helping me with depression. She's always there for me, and she cheers me up," Garcia said.
Garcia said that if he cannot keep Mookie at his side at the facility, he might have to stay somewhere else.
"I hope they are willing to resolve the issue, because I'm not the only soldier that's going to want service dogs," he told KFOX-TV.
Ina written statement, a base spokesperson said last week that the hospital is working with Garcia to find a place -- on or off the base -- that will accommodate his service dog.
