European Advocates Deliver One Million Signatures For Disability
Rights
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express

2007
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM--More than 1,000 disability rights advocates from
all over Europe gathered Thursday near the headquarters of the European
Commission, to demand an end to discrimination based on disability.
The demonstrators presented to the European Parliament a petition with more than one million signatures showing support for a measure combating "all forms of discrimination and guaranteeing the full inclusion" of 50 million people with disabilities living within the European Union. Many of the signatures for the 1million4disability campaign were gathered door-to-door and through petition drives.
Thursday's two-hour rally included an outdoor festival with live music and personal stories from participants.
"People from different countries were laughing and joking with each other, but we also realized it was a serious moment in the fight for equality," said Graham Hicks, who traveled to Brussels from Peterborough, England.
"We've recently made big steps forward in the battle for disability rights in the UK, but many European countries are lagging way behind," Hicks, who is deaf and blind, told the Peterborough Today news.
