Report: Employment Gap Widens For Americans With
Disabilities
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express
November 8,
2007
WASHINGTON, DC--A national study revealed this week that the
employment gap between Americans with and without disabilities is growing,
causing more of those with disabilities to live in poverty.
Cornell University released its third annual Disability Status Report, this year showing that 38 percent of working-age adults with disabilities are employed, compared with 80 percent of those without disabilities.
Using raw data from a U.S. Census Bureau Survey, the researchers also found that 25.4 percent of working-age Americans with disabilities live in poverty, compared with 9.5 percent of those without disabilities.
"People with disabilities are not keeping pace in this economy," said Andrew Houtenville, director of Cornell's Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Disability Demographics and Statistics, in a press release.
"This employment gap has severe consequences for poverty. People with disabilities are much more likely to live in poverty."
