What will I not read about in Inclusion Daily
Express?
- You definitely won't see any advertisements, virus alerts, jokes, or
e-mail chain letters.
- You probably won't see items about "cures" or ways to "prevent"
disabilities. This implies that there is something wrong about people with
disabilities that must be "fixed" or "removed", and that there is a whole group
of people that are undesirable. This kind of thinking also puts the focus on
changing people rather than accepting and including them.
- Some members of the mainstream media or other groups may use terms
that are considered negative or insensitive of people who have disabilities. At
Inclusion Daily Express we respect and value people's differences. We won't
make insulting or offensive references to people who have been labeled because
they don't meet somebody's standard of "normal" or "ordinary".
- It's unlikely you'll see articles about fund-raising events and
"prevention campaigns". Many people with disabilities have said that they
resent being used as "poster children" to create a feeling of pity in order to
raise money for programs, services, or research into preventing their
"conditions". We respect that position.
