U.K. Commission Verified High Rates Of Employment, Accessibility
Complaints
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express

2008
CARDIFF, WALES--More than two years after elements of the
Disability Discrimination Act went into effect in the United Kingdom, human
rights officials continue to receive a large number of complaints from people
with disabilities accusing businesses and public entities of discrimination.
In Wales alone, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, which last year replaced the Disability Rights Commission, received an average of 100 disability-related complaints each month during the traditionally "quiet" months of July, August, and September.
According to Saturday's Daily Post, most of the complaints centered on workplace discrimination. Many, however, were related to accessibility problems at hotels, campgrounds, leisure activities, and parking lots, along with allegations that rules at financial institutions and insurance companies discriminated against people that have disabilities.
EHRC officials said the complaints in Wales were mirrored throughout the U.K. They added that they would follow up on substantiated complaints by taking private firms and public entities to tribunals and county courts, potentially leading to millions of pounds in fines.
