Council Rejects Permit For Deaf Priests' Study Center
By Dave

CASTLE HILLS,
TEXAS--A deaf priest and his nonprofit organization have been denied a
special-use permit to operate a study center for other deaf priests out of a
nine-bedroom house.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, the Castle Hills City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to reject the permit sought by Reverend Tom Coughlin of the House of Studies for Deaf Seminarians.
Castle Hills' zoning law reportedly would allow five people who are not related to live in the nine-bedroom, nine-bath house. The home's owner would need to seek a special permit to have more than five residents.
Most of the 200 people that packed the city council meeting said they supported the priests.
"What better residents and neighbors could we ask for?" asked neighbor Lynette McClaren.
Those who opposed it said they were worried it would lead to other groups coming along, such as halfway houses.
Coughlin said later that he was disappointed and might challenge the council's decision.
