New York Elections Board Finally On Track With Voting Law

SPRINGS, NEW YORK--Voters with disabilities in New York should be able to cast
an independent, private ballot this coming September, now that the state's
Board of Elections has approved new accessible voting machines.
On Thursday, the board approved three different voting systems that are fully accessible. Counties will have the option of choosing any of the approved systems. Each of those systems submit votes electronically and print paper receipts that can be used for recounts. The machines also include "sip and blow" technologies and audio instructions for voters that cannot read.
The counties are to have the systems in place by the 23rd of August, in time for the fall elections.
This brings the state closer to fully complying with the Help America Vote Act of 2002. The federal law requires each polling place to be accessible and have at least one accessible voting machine.
The U.S. Department of Justice sued New York in 2006 after the state failed to comply with HAVA deadlines.
