Wheelchair User Stages One-Man Protest Over Parking Violators
April 4, 2008

MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND--This week, wheelchair users that are tired of being blocked from parking in zones reserved for them outside James Cook University Hospital took their frustration to the press.

One of them, John Welsh, has even gone so far as to stage a one-man protest outside the hospital.

Welsh told the Evening Gazette that every day as many as 30 people are illegally parking in the 14 bays that are designated for patients with disabilities outside the hospital's spinal unit.

He said people are parking there to avoid paying £2.20 ($4.35 US) in the main parking area.

"It’s free to park here," said Walsh, who has used a wheelchair since he broke his neck in a diving accident 24 years ago.

"That’s why people are doing it, they don’t need a permit so they get away with it. So I want to get the message across that this car park is for disabled people only."
