Criminals Take Note: Don't Mess With Winnie Wiles
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express
April 30, 2008

BARTLESVILLE, OKLAHOMA--She is 95 years old, stands just 4 feet, 11 inches tall, and uses a wheelchair.

But, don't be fooled: Nobody's gonna mess with Winnie Wiles.

That's what Robert Newton Horsley found out last week.

Wiles woke up at 3 o'clock Saturday morning to sounds of somebody trying to get into her house.

So, she slid out of bed and into her wheelchair, then grabbed a flathead screwdriver and wheeled into the living room.

At some point, the would-be intruder broke the glass in the door, and reached inside to unlock it.

That's when Winnie pounced.

When police arrived an hour later, they found a bloody front door, and a bloody porch floor with a bloody Mr. Horsley passed out on it.

He had several open wounds on his arms and hands -- one so deep it nearly split his knuckle.

Officers also found a frightened, yet determined Winnie Wiles in her wheelchair -- armed with a bloody screwdriver.

Police arrested Horsley, 46, and charged him with first-degree burglary and public intoxication. They believe Horsley probably got drunk and didn't know where he was.

"She kept telling him to go away, that he had the wrong house and to leave her alone," said Chief Tom Holland, "but he kept trying to get in."

"And every time he did it, she stabbed him," Holland said. Every time she stabbed him, Horsley would say, "Lady, quit stabbing me."

"When we got there, it was almost comical to us," Holland explained.

"Here's this guy lying on the porch. He's got blood everywhere and he's passed out and there's this little old lady sitting in a wheelchair with a big old flathead screwdriver."
