Fernald Developmental Center -- Oldest Institution In the Americas

Background: Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney announced in February 2003 that the Walter E. Fernald Developmental Center, the oldest institution housing people with developmental disabilities in the Western Hemisphere, would close by October 2004. Employees and family members of institution residents, determined to stop the closure, have worked effectively to slow down the process.
