People With Disabilities Among Hardest Hit By
Hurricanes Katrina & Rita
Hurricane Katrina slammed into the coastline of Louisiana,
Alabama, and Mississippi on August 29, 2005, literally blowing and washing away
entire neighborhoods, and breaking down protective levies, leaving much of the
New Orleans area under many feet of water.
As the death toll continued to rise, the hurricane and its
aftermath was being called one of the greatest single natural disasters in U.S.
history.
In this case, as in most natural and man-made disasters, people
with disabilities were among the most at-risk. Dozens died in nursing homes and
medical centers. More died in their own homes or on the street.
Three weeks later, Hurricane Rita hit the coast of Texas and
southwestern Louisiana. Fewer people perished because Rita turned out to be
less intense, and because they fled the area ahead of the storm.
